Fondant Versus Buttercream
Buttercream, which is usually made with butter,
will tend to melt in warmer temperatures,
whereas fondant will not and is generally preferred
for summer weddings.
However, some Americans are turned off by the
texture of fondant, considering it chewy and prefer buttercream regardless.

personally i've always preferred buttercream for the same texture reasons you mentioned. that said, as someone who spent a summer working in the wedding industry, for summer weddings ((especially those held outdoors)) fondant holds up SO much better. i can't count how many beautifully done buttercream cakes i watched slowly sag and melt. tragic really.

are often used in conversation. I just
smile and nod.
Love buttercream and never got into fondant. Of course, it looks awesome on all the fancy decorated cakes, just not sure I want to eat it!
I choose buttercream
Down here in the Deep South, heat and the humidity play huge roles in decorating cakes. I find that either Swiss Buttercream or Italian Buttercream hold up really really well. PLUS, they aren't quite as sweet and they're much smoother.

My thoughts on meringue based buttercreams are that they are excellent for those who prefer something less sweet. They also have a nice texture and hold up well in heat and humidity, however, to make either Italian or Swiss Buttercream will take some practice as you will need to boil sugar at the right temperature for Italian Buttercream and use a baine marie (double boiler) for Swiss Buttercream.
For novice cake decorators or for those who do not mind something sweet, I highly recommend high ratio shortening and butter based buttercreams for decorating cakes.
I prefer the taste of buttercream but I love the clean look of fondant, and the fact that you can make characters from the fondant is a plus too!
I prefer Buttercream. My kids too love it more than fondant. But my hubby has special liking for fondant.
I make my own fondant with marshmallow and taste wonderfull and i layer very thin and people love it because is not chewy and taste good.
