I learned that the hard way with cloves. I was making baklava and the syrup called for 3 whole cloves. I was maybe 15 at the time and I thought if 3 was good, a dozen would be better. The syrup was quite tasty, but left us all with numb tongues. This is when I found out about the numbing properties of clove oil.
